Emma Roberts Joins Rashida Jones and Andy Samberg in‘Celeste and Jesse Forever’| /Film

Wereportednot long ago onCeleste and Jesse Forever, which hasRashida Jonesnot only starring, but co-writing the script withWill McCormack.Andy Sambergwas also in the first round of cast picks, and nowEmma Roberts,Chris MessinaandAri Graynorhave signed on, too. The film is a comedy that quite a few people will be able to relate to, as it follows a young couple in the middle of a divorce who try to maintain some sort of friendship while still living together.

As it turns out, they’re not just living together, but starting to see other people while in that divorce-pending, final split-up double whammy situation. (I’ve been through almost that exact situation, and it actually worked out OK because we both followed one simple rule: don’t ever bring anyone else home. That rule simply must be broken in the film.)

Varietyexplains the roles for the new additions, saying Emma Roberts will be“a starlet who, when her career sags, helps the protagonist come out of her shell by hiring her to revamp her image. Messina plays a financial analyst who helps Celeste get over Jesse, while Graynor will play Celeste’s best friend from college who’s uncomfortable with her unusual arrangement.”

The success ofBridesmaidscan’t be hurting this project, as Rashida Jones says she wrote it in part as a response to male-driven comedies:

It’s hard to find female leads that are flawed and interesting and dynamic. We wanted to write something that was in the vein of Judd Apatow—you talk like you actually talk with your friends—but with ladies… I want to do that and not just be someone’s girlfriend or wife. I want to be theone to go on the journey.

Lee Toland Krieger(The Vicious Kind) will direct.

Cannes:‘The Tree of Life’Takes Palme d’Or;‘Melancholia,’‘The Artist’and‘Drive’Win Big Prizes | /Film

The Cannes jury, headed by Robert De Niro, has selected the winners of this year’s competition slate, and the results are slightly surprising. In the early days of the fest two films quickly emerged as seeming front-runners for the top prize,Lynne Ramsay‘sWe Need to Talk About KevinandMichel Hazanavicius‘ silent black and white filmThe Artist, but the Palme d’Or went instead toTerrence Malick‘sThe Tree of Life.

The slate of winners was surprisingly tipped towards American films and talent, or films that played very specifically towards American tendencies in a way that isn’t quite typical for a Cannes awards slate. The full list of winners is after the break.

The Tree of Lifetaking the Palme d’Or is certainly a big deal, and an unexpected validation of those who saw in Terrence Malick’s long-awaited film some of his strongest work to date. That opinion is hardly universal, however, and the film definitely has its detractors and naysayers. It is a film that any film lover should see, however, and represents an unusual intersection of experimentation, traditional drama, and modern filmmaking technology. It’s a film I’m looking forward to seeing again, despite the fact that the segments that bookend the film left me a bit mystified and worn down.

Kirsten Dunstwas awarded Best Actress based upon her work inLars Von Trier‘sMelancholia. That’s as good a reason as any to stop obsessing about Lars Von Trier’s silly press conference comments and start talking about the film. (Problem being that most of us haven’t yet had a chance to see the film, while everyone who wants to can see the press conference. Still: moratorium time.) This is the third Best Actress award at Cannes for someone appearing in a LVT film. (Charlotte Gainsbourg inAntichristand Bjork inDancer in the Darkbeing the other two.) Not a bad record for a director who is so often tagged as a misogynist.

AndJean Dujardin, who has previously been known for starring in the comedic OSS 117 films as well as many other roles as in Guillaume Canet’sLittle White Lies, took Best Actor for his work as a struggling silent film star inThe Artist. A good showing for a film that a great many people have been talking about over the past ten days, but a far cry from the Palme d’Or that some thought the film would win.

Perhaps the most surprising award went toNicolas Winding Refn, who took Best Director forDrive. Granted, people seemed to come out of Drive simply ecstatic over the film, but Cannes isn’t known for handing out directing awards to filmmakers who turn up with strange action films involving car chases.

Israeli filmmakerJoseph Cedarwon Best Screenplay forFootnote, and the Jury Prize was split between two films:The Dardenne Brothers‘ effortThe Kid With the Bike(another seeming Palme d’Or frontrunner) andOnce Upon a Time in AnatoliabyNuri Bilge Ceylan. The Camera d’Or, aka the best first film award, went toLas AcaciasbyPablo Giorgelli.

Early Reaction: Matthew Vaughn’s ‘X-Men: First Class’ | /Film

On Saturday, I had the opportunity to seeMatthew Vaughn‘sX-Men: First Class. Over the last year, we’ve heard about how the film had morphed from the original concept ofX-Men Origins: Magnetointo a prequel/reboot in the same style of whatJJ Abramsdid for theStar Trekfranchise. I can confirm that the completed film is exactly both of these things. It fits right in with Bryan Singer’s first twoX-Menfilms and is probably the second best film in the series next toX-Men United. And I say that with a certain but of nostalgia for the sequel, as it came out at a time when comic book adaptations didn’t strive to be anything more than popcorn fun. But the more and more I think about it, the more and more I think Vaughn’s film might have surpassed it.

Going into the film, I had so many expectations (most of which were set-up by the trailers).  I had assumed that the advertising was being packed with all the moments in an effort to sell a action-less origin story, but I was surprised at how much action was actually the film. I don’t think anyone will see this movie and come out disappointed. It strikes a great balance of being accessible to non-comic book fans and packing some pretty cool easter eggs that comic geeks will love (I will keep this vague as I don’t want to spoil any of the fun).

While I have read a lot of X-Men comics in the 1990′s, I’m not really clear on the origins on some of these characters and what events in the comic universe led to certain situations. So while I’m unable to assess how faithful it is to comic book canon, I will say that everything is handled quite nicely. Picky fans might notice some continuity nitpicks and possible timeline issues (especially if you look at this as a prequel to the film series), but nothing major

And Vaughn adds his trademark style to the series in all the right moments, without making the cinematography feel out of place in the period setting. For example, one such moment (and I wouldn’t consider a spoiler in any way) is Hank McCoy’s transformation into Beast. Vaughn handles the sequence like a werewolf transformation, but shot in a way I’ve never seen it before, from Hank’s POV. It is very cool. There is a bit of cheesy dialogue, especially in the scenes that focus on the younger mutants. But at the core, this is a story about Charles Xavier andErik Lehnsherr (played brilliantly in this film byJames McAvoyandMichael Fassbender), two best friends who will become enemies at the center of the mutant revolution.

We can’t really go into specifics at this time, so I’m trying to keep everything general. I recorded a short video blog with Frosty fromCollider, joined by /Film’s own Germain Lussier. Watch it now embedded after the jump.

Video blog reaction:

Buzz from other sites:

Bleeding Cool:“First Classcontains some of the briskest and most efficient storytelling I’ve seen in any recent blockbuster. An awful lot happens, and awfully quickly at times, but it’s all clear and while some nice moments might be over in the blink of an eye, this can only reward repeat viewers.…  This film does not hang around – and at over two hours of running time, that’s a virtue, because when nothing drags, and the audience don’t get bored, the minutes just whistle by. There are some characters who get short shrift and aren’t allowed the space, or focus, that would have allowed them to really come to life – Riptide and Azazel, definitely, and Darwin, perhaps; and Moira McTaggart sort of fades away for a while, but while she’s around, some of her scenes are great. An amazing amount of the characters are sketched out most deftly. It’s that efficiency again.”

HitFix:“Right now, I’m still sort of in shock at how much of it works, and how ambitious the entire thing is.”…“It uses your expectations about the genre to set you up one way, then time and again, reaches for something a little bit more perverse or a little bit more eccentric or a little bit more heartfelt.”…“X-Men: First Class is a genuinely good movie, not just a good superhero movie.  Big and bold and aggressively told, it feels to me like this is the first film in a brand-new franchise, and even the few very wicked and enjoyable references to Singer’s films that are hidden in this one don’t tie it down.  This is ground zero, and I think Fox just got it right, really right, in a way I can’t say it feels like they have on any of their Marvel films so far.  With the right support, and with this film’s key creative team onboard, a sequel to this could well be the X-Men epic we’ve been waiting for since day one.”

HeyUGuys:“It’s rather pleasing then, that X-Men: First Class takes the series back to its roots, both figuratively, in terms of the character-focused drama, and literally, as we open with an almost shot-for-shot recreation of the beginning of Bryan Singer’s first X-Men film. In doing so, the film makes itself instantly familiar, and also, instantly engaging.”…“Indeed, it is in the treatment of the characters, and their relationships that the film really triumphs.”… “Vaughn’s ability to direct action, and sense of humour run through the film, while the film still feels very much like a part of the world Singer created in his movies.”

Blogomatic3000:“X-Men: First Classdoes not forget what came before, in fact there are nods to it throughout, both fun and terribly sad, but fresh faces have breathed new life into familiar characters and their battle for acceptance has an added touch of humanity.”…“There is all the excitement, pace and spectacle that you would expect and want from anX-Menfilm.”

‘The Adventures of Tintin’International Teaser Has New Footage | /Film

Did you want more out of thefirst teaserforThe Adventures of Tintinthat arrived earlier this week? Then check out the international version, which still shies away from showing much of Tintin’s face, but does offer a few new shots.

I’m waiting to see an extensive dialogue sequence before jumping to any conclusions about the film, but there is stuff I like in this footage: the expressive lighting, some of the clever compositions and that wonderful shot of the desert being overcome by a ship (the Unicorn of the seemingly-ditched subtitle‘the Secret of the Unicorn’) as waves roll over the dunes. It’s that sort of shot that I figure attractedSteven Spielbergto the idea of doing a mo-cap movie in the first place.

Beyond that, the physical animation looks about on par with what we’ve seen in films likeA Christmas Carol. It’s the faces, though, that will be all-important, and like the US trailer, this clip isn’t really ready to show off anyone in close-up. We get a few glimpses of character faces, but there’s not much to go on. We’ll have to see Tintin talking and really engaging with the world around him to be assured that this film is able to bridge the uncanny valley, into which films likeMars Needs Momstoppled and sank.

The Adventures of TintinstarsJamie Bell,Simon Pegg,Nick Frost,Toby Jones,Andy Serkis,Mackenzie Crook,Tony Curran,Daniel Mays,Sebastian RocheandGad Elmaleh. It is scheduled for an October 26th opening in the UK and Europe, and a U.S. release on December 23rd.

Four Awesome New Posters For‘Horrible Bosses’ | /Film

The summer of 2011 is looking pretty solid when it comes to comedies.Bridesmaidsis already something of a hit, we knowThe Hangover Part IIis going to be a monster and with the recent releases of trailers for films like30 Minutes Or Less, Friends With Benefits, Crazy Stupid Love, Bad Teacher, The Change UpandHorrible Bosses, maybe this summer will be remembered less for its loud explosions and leotards and more for its laughs.

Out of all of those films, though, arguably the one with the most pre-release buzz isHorrible Bosses. The trailer wasan almost universal hitand people who’ve seen test screenings of the film say it lives up to the hype. Now, with the release of these eye-catching and clever posters, even more people are going to start getting excited about the film which starsJason Bateman, Jason SudeikisandCharlie Dayas three friends who conspire to kill their“horrible bosses” played byJennifer Aniston, Colin FarrellandKevin Spacey. Directed bySeth Gordon(The King of Kong), it’ll be released July 8. Check out the posters after the jump.

Thanks toEmpire(with a heads up fromThe Playlist) for these beauties.

What’s really drawing me, and I’m sure others, to this movie is not the simple, universal feeling of disliking an authority figure or hating your job.Office Spacedid that. It’s that the film, which was co-written byJonathan GoldsteinandJohn Francis Daley(yes, the star ofBonesandFreaks and Geeks), looks like it goes really dark. Getting revenge or playing a joke on a boss is one thing. HiringJamie Foxxto help you conspire to kill them, and making it funny, is a whole other thing. The one thing that’s not completely selling me onHorrible Bossesis that, for a film with such dark potential, the three stars– Bateman, Day and Sudeikis– are almost too sweet and likable.

Are you anticipating this film in anyway? And do these posters do anything for you?

‘Good Neighbors’Trailer: Watch Out For Jay Baruchel | /Film

Jacob TierneydirectedJay Baruchelin the indieThe Trotsky, and the two have teamed up once more for a film that changes up their previous equation a little bit.Good Neighborsis a thriller of the‘our neighbor may be a murderer’ sort that also featuresEmily Hampshire,Scott SpeedmanandXavier Dolan. The first trailer has launched, and it asks you to accept both a dangerous Jay Baruchel and a whole lot of Trailer Voice.

I can accept scary Jay Baruchel. Pretty easily, actually— the idea that he might actually be a freaky killer is a lot more scary than some of the stuff movies want us to be scared of. But the edit of this trailer is terrible and doesn’t give him much power. And I can’t be the only one who wanted to auto-complete the trailervoice statement“…when everyone is a suspect” with“except the guy in the wheelchair”? I’d be happy if Scott Speedman was the killer, actually.

Apple has the HD trailer, and the film will be on iTunes on June 24.

Neighbors Spencer (Scott Speedman) and Louise (Emily Hampshire) have bonded over their fascination with a recent string of murders terrorizing their community. When a new tenant named Victor (Jay Baruchel) arrives in the building, all three quickly hit it off. But as they soon discover, each of them has their own dark secret. As the violence outside mounts, the city retreats indoors for safety. But the more time these three spend together in their apartment building, the clearer it becomes that what they once thought of as a safe haven is as dangerous as any outside terrors they could imagine. Smart dialogue, strong performances and jarring thrills give this film all the elements of a great mystery.

Last May it wasannouncedthat 20th Century Fox was developing an animated television series based on the 2004 Fox Searchlight filmNapoleon Dynamite. A year later, Fox has released the first trailer for the upcoming series,Napoleon Dynamite: The Animated Series. The one minute promo is only a teaser, as the series won’t air until Midseason 2012. Looks pretty much like you would expect, the question is: Is it still funny or are they capitalizing on the popularity of the 2004 indie a little too late? Watch the promo trailer now embedded after the jump. Please leave your thoughts in the comments below.

Trailer:

Creators/Executive Producers

  • Jared Hess
  • Jerusha Hess

NAPOLEON DYNAMITE (Heder) is a 16-year-old boy convinced– for no apparent reason – that he is destined for greatness and blessed with unlimited “sweet abilities.” He spends his days practicing ninja moves, drawing ligers, soul dancing and bragging about his “girlfriend in Oklahoma” whom nobody has ever seen. Napoleon’s brother, KIP (Ruell),is an unemployed 32-year-old who lives at home and believes he would be an amazing catch for any girl who would respond to his online come-ons. The Dynamite brothers live with GRANDMA (Martin), a crusty woman who can often be found four-wheeling with her lady friends at the local sand dunes.

Napoleon’s allies include PEDRO (Ramirez), his unflappable best friend who has recently been elected class president; and DEB (Majorino), an incredibly sweet girl who sees the good in Napoleon and dreams of someday being his wife. Napoleon’s UNCLE RICO (Gries) lives out of an orange custom van, where heobsesses over his botched high school football career and dreams up ways to become rich and famous. Then there’s REX KWON DO (Bader), a self-proclaimed martial-arts master who runs the local dojo.

Guest voices in the debut season include Jennifer Coolidge (“American Pie,” “Legally Blonde”), Sam Rockwell (“Choke”) and Jemaine Clement (“Flight of the Conchords”).

NAPOLEON DYNAMITE is a 20th Century Fox Television production. The series is created and executive-produced by Jared Hess and Jerusha Hess (“Napoleon Dynamite,” “Nacho Libre”), along with Emmy Award-winning writer/producer Mike Scully (THE SIMPSONS, “Everybody Loves Raymond,” “Parks& Recreation”). The animation house is Rough Draft Studios (“Futurama,” “The Simpsons Movie”).

Neil Jordan Will Direct Saoirse Ronan and Gemma Arterton in Vampire Story‘Byzantium’ | /Film

IsSaoirse Ronanthe latest young talent to be cloned so that she can be attached to many projects at once? That appears to be the case. She’s already scheduled for The Host,  may be in Joe Wright’sAnna Kareninaand Emma Thompson’sEffie, and the latest is a film calledByzantium, a‘mother-daughter’ vampire tale co-starringGemma ArtertonthatNeil Jordanwill direct.

The news (out of Cannes, natch— this weekend is going to be flooded with reports like this, just as the last few days have been) is that the film is based on an original script byMoira Buffini, whoscriptedthe recent version ofJane Eyre, and is about“a mother vampire who turns her own daughter into a vampire and the pair form a lethal partnership, sometimes posing as sisters.” The script is based on her own playA Vampire Story, and wereportedon the play-to-film conversion back in 2009. You can find a much longer, possibly spoilerish, synopsis of the play at that link.

Neil Jordan, of course, got in on the vampire craze before there was a vampire craze, directing Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt and a then-unknown Kirsten Dunst in the not-so-great Anne Rice adaptationInterview With the Vampire. He was also ahead of the current fairy tale craze withThe Company of Wolvesin 1984.

In fact, this film will be produced byThe Company of Woolvesproducer Stephen Wooley, who says,

I love the horror genre and we’ve been working on this for three or four years. I sent it to Neil and he liked the script. We’d both recently revisited Angela Carter’s book and it was just chance that when I called {Jordan}, we were thinking along the same lines.

Sales are ongoing at Cannes for the film, so we’ll see where things go in the next week or so. {THR}

‘The Muppets’Strange Teaser Poster | /Film

When we saw thelogofor Disney’s upcomingThe Muppetsit looked just about right. Now a reader-snapped image of the film’s first teaser poster has hit AICN and it looks, well, kinda weird. Check out a slightly bigger version after the break.

It’s strange to see most of the Muppets in full-body form. And the tagline (really? that’s the tagline?), poses and lighting all make this look more like Muppets from M. Night Shyamalan than from Jason Segel. I’m going on the belief that this is real, and the hope that Disney will quickly move on to a more Muppet-friendly design.

On vacation in Los Angeles, Walter, the world’s biggest Muppet fan, and his friends Gary (Jason Segel) and Mary (Amy Adams) from Smalltown, USA, discover the nefarious plan of oilman Tex Richman (Chris Cooper) to raze the Muppet Theater and drill for the oil recently discovered beneath the Muppets’ former stomping grounds. To stage TheGreatest Muppet Telethon Ever and raise the $10 million needed to save the theater, Walter, Mary and Gary help Kermit reunite the Muppets, who have all gone their separate ways: Fozzie now performs with a Reno casino tribute band called the Moopets, Miss Piggy is a plus-size fashion editor atVogue Paris, Animal is in a Santa Barbara clinic for anger management, and Gonzo is a high-powered plumbing magnate. With secret, signature, celebrity cameos, “The Muppets” hits the big screen Nov. 23, 2011.

Matthew McConaughy and Hilary Swank Join‘The Dallas Buyer’s Club’| /Film

One’s an multiple Oscar winner, the other a romantic comedy mainstay, but together they’re going to tell the true story of how one man single-handedly saved innumerable people from death.Hilary SwankandMatthew McConaughyhave just signed on to star inThe Dallas Buyer’s Club, written byCraig BortenandMelisa Wallackand directed byJean-Marc Vallee(The Young Victoria). A project that’s been long in the making, it’s about Texas electrician Ron Woodroof who, in 1987, was diagnosed with AIDS and given six months to live. Instead, he lived six years, illegally smuggling medicine into the United States.

The news of the deal broke at the currently in progress Cannes Film Festival. It was reported on by all the usual suspects - Variety,DeadlineandThe Hollywood Reporter. The title refers to a group founded by Woodroff, composed of several thousand members, who distribute AIDS medication.

News of this project stretches back to 2007 when Brad Pitt was attached to produce and star with Marc Forster attached to direct. Obviously, that didn’t happen. But the fact that he was interested, and that the project is still being developed, certainly says something about it.

For years McConaughy has kind of kept himself in a very comfortable zone, portraying many similar characters that would woo Kate Hudson and stand back to back on a movie poster. He got away from that a little bit with the surprise hitThe Lincoln Lawyerand it seems, with this role, he’ll stay in that dramatic genre.

However, the Woodroof character has charisma. How do I know? Read this opening excerpt froma Dallas Observer articleon him:

The thin man in gray approached customs with contraband— 36 vials of a life-renewing drug packed in dry ice in a black leather briefcase — bound for Dallas. It should have been easy to slip out of Tokyo, but there were problems. A conspicuous frosty patch had condensed on the surface of the briefcase, and smoke seeped through its sides as dry ice evaporated. Ron Woodroof, an experienced smuggler, moved fast. He slipped the vials into his pocket and popped open the briefcase for Japanese officials, understandably suspicious of smoking luggage.

“Why are you carrying dry ice around the world?” one asked.“Would you believe,” Woodroof replied,“that it’s a fetish of mine?”

Victorious, he boarded his plane. Within two weeks, in April, he had begun shipping oral alpha interferon to hundreds of U.S. men and women dying of AIDS.

Head over tothe Observer websiteto read the rest of the story and, there by, learn more about the film.

Do you think McConaughy will be able to play this modern Robin Hood role?

Aaron Eckhart, Sean Bean and AnnaSophia Robb Join Dark‘Peter Pan’Project | /Film

As twoSnow Whitefilmsgear up to go intoproduction, the next big fairy tale that’ll be racing to the big screen isPeter Pan.Several competing projects, all with slightly altered takes on the classicJ.M. Barrietale, are in various stages of development and nowone seems to have jumped aheadof the pack. Essential Entertainment has reportedly castAaron Eckhart,Sean BeanandAnnaSophia Robbin a dark take on thePeter Pantalelast year rumored to be calledPan, written byBen Magid(Hack/Slash) and directed byBen Hibon(who did the animated sequence inHarry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part One). In the film, Captain Hook (Eckhart) and his partner Smee (Bean) would chase Pan, a villainous kidnapper, whose last victim Wendy (Robb) helps track him down.

ScreenDaily brokethe news of this casting, which was reportedly once set up at New Line as a possible directing gig for Guillermo Del Toro. The package hopes to kick off pre-sales in Cannes before shooting beings in October.

Word of this project first was revealed byVariety last Novemberbut then, in March, we ran an articledetailing several of the possible Pan projectsand this one did not appear on the list. However, the plot description is exactly like a spec supposedly written by Aaron Henry and Kirk Kjeldsen. We’re not sure if Magid did a new version of that spec or if the two projects are totally independent, as The Hollywood Reporter says one thing and IMDB Pro says another.

Either way, flipping thePantale to make him the villain and Hook the hero kind of goes against the whole point ofPeter Pan.Peter Panis about never wanting to grow up and the joys of childhood. It’s not about kidnapping or Captain Hook, they’re totally secondary.  It’s almost as if the idea of even loosely associating the film withPeter Panis insignificant when it could just be a Sherlock and Watson type team chasing a brutal child criminal. Why does it have to be Pan? But, if Eckhart, Bean and Robb have all signed on, chances are it works.

Does this sound like a cast, and take on the material, you can get behind?

Brett Ratner to Direct‘The 39 Clues’| /Film

Because I know many of you just get all giddy when prospective newBrett Ratnerfilms come up, here’s his latest potential project:The 39 Clues, which is not an Alfred Hitchcock remake, but an adaptation of a young-adult book series. It sounds a bit like a kids’ version ofNational Treasure, and all the details are after the break.

Deadlinenotes that this has been set up at DreamWorks since 2008, and was once a possible film for Steven Spielberg to direct. But now it has passed into different hands, and frequent Brett Ratner collaboratorJeff Nathansonhas written the latest script. (He also wroteCatch Me If You Can,The Terminaland the story forIndiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, making him the bridge between Spielberg and Ratner.)

So what’s the story? The first book in the series,The Maze of Bones, goes like this:

When their beloved Aunt Grace dies, Dan, 11, and Amy, 14—along with other Cahill descendants—are faced with an unusual choice: inherit one million dollars or participate in a perilous treasure hunt. Cahills have determined the course of history for centuries, and this quest’s outcome will bring the victors untoward power and affect all of humankind. Against the wishes of nasty Aunt Beatrice, their reluctant guardian since their parents’ deaths, Dan and Amy accept the challenge, convincing their college-age au pair to serve as designated adult. Pitted against other Cahill teams, who will stop at nothing to win, the siblings decipher the first of 39 clues and are soon hot on the historical trail of family member Ben Franklin to unearth the next secret.

Like I said, a little bit ofNational Treasure, with a modern video game slant (there are card and video game components to the overall story) and also vaguely reminiscent of the’70s–’90s puzzle books that offered real-life prizes. (LikeMasquerade, by Kit Williams. Adaptthat, Brett Ratner! Better yet, don’t.)

In all seriousness, though, while it has been so easy to slag Brett Ratner over the last few years, I remain very curious to see what he’s done withTower Heist, which comes out this fall with Ben Stiller, Eddie Murphy and Casey Affleck.

‘The Skin I Live In’Teaser Trailer: Pedro Almodovar Prepares to Creep Out Cannes | /Film

The working team of directorPedro Almodovarand actorAntonio Banderaswas once potent, and while Mr. Almodovar has continued to make excellent films since their last pairing (Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!in 1990), Antonio Banderas has been slowly defanged over many years. So their reunion was reason enough to celebrate. The fact that their first film together in 20 years,The Skin I Live In, is a very messed-up sounding story about a surgeon and his… unusual… relationships with women make it even more tantalizing.

The film premieres very soon in Cannes and has a November release date planned via Sony Pictures Classics in the US. Now there is a wildly creepy teaser, which you can see after the break. This one is either going to significantly increase your interest in seeing the film, or help that interest dissipate altogether.

I don’t know about you— I expect some very differing reactions to this— but now I’m even more ready for this film. Antonio Banderas looks like he’s in rare form here. We haven’t seen him look like this in far too long, and I welcome the return. Check out a couple more teaser imageshere.

Here’s the synopsis from Cannes, which suggests that the film is just a bit different from thesource novel(Tarantula, by Thierry Jonquet) if no less twisted:

Ever since his wife was burned in a car crash, Dr. Robert Ledgard, an eminent plastic surgeon, has been interested in creating a new skin with which he could have saved her. After twelve years, he manages to cultivate a skin that is a real shield against every assault. In addition to years of study and experimentation, Robert needed a further three things: no scruples, an accomplice and a human guinea pig. Scruples were never a problem. Marilia, the woman who looked after him from the day he was born, is his most faithful accomplice. And as for the human guinea pig…

The Skin I Live Inalso stars Elena Anaya,Marisa Paredes,Jan Cornet,Roberto Alamo,Blanca Suárez,Eduard Fernández,José Luis Gómez,Bárbara Lennie,Susi Sánchez,Fernando CayoandTeresa Manresa. {Flix, viaTwitch}

Michael Fassbender in Talks For Danny Boyle’s‘Trance,’More Plot Details Revealed | /Film

This week we got the unexpected news thatDanny Boylewill direct a film before he goes to work on the 2012 London Olympics. He won’t actually finish the movie until after the Olympics are done, but he’ll at least have the footage in the can (or on the hard drive, as it were) and ready to cut when the games are done. Now we know thatMichael Fassbenderis in talks to play the lead role in the movie, a heist thriller calledTrance.

THRactually refers to the project as Trances, and reveals a chunky plot synopsis that we didn’t previously have:

An assistant at an auction house masterminds {an art}  heist and teams up with a gang of thieves, but suffers a blow to the head and wakes up with amnesia. He is the only one who knows where the painting’s location is and after his continued failure to remember, the gang begins to suspect duplicity on his part and hire a female hypnotist to get into his brain.

If he signs, Michael Fassbender would (a) instantly make this an even more tantalizing project and (b) play the“shady leader of the gang.”

The fact that the film is a remake is a bit unexpected, but it doesn’t much diminish my interest in seeing Danny Boyle make a heist thriller, especially if Michael Fassbender is representative of the cast he hopes to assemble. And while it will be a drag knowing throughout 2012 that this has been shot and is just sitting on a drive somewhere, at the same time I’ll be happy to go into 2013 knowing we have this to look forward to.

‘Project Nim’Trailer: Where Does the Line Between Man and Animal Really Fall? | /Film

‘From the director ofMan on Wire‘ is all a film needs to get my attention, andProject Nimdefinitely does not look like it is going to disappoint. The film, which explores the relationship between man and other species through the lens of a loose experiment designed to teach sign language to a chimp, premiered at Sundance to very good notice. Now there’s a trailer, and I think any of you that watch it will be ready to see the film afterward.

At Sundance Davidreviewedthe picture, saying,

There are moments of absolute magic inProject Nim, and most of them involve Nim himself: his“conversations” with humans, his strange habits and mannerisms, his inherently adorable nature in his youth.

And the movie obviously asks some big questions about the differences between man and animal, and where the line between species really is. Questions about the nature of language are implicit here, too, and the filmmaking byJames Marsh— working in a mode that is similar toMan on Wire, if using a very different sort of energy, looks clear and conducive to those questions.

There’s no embed for now, so until we can drop one in, click the player below to go to the Apple hosted version.

Head toApplefor the HD version of the trailer.

From the Oscar-winning team behind MAN ON WIRE comes the story of Nim, the chimpanzee who in the 1970s became the focus of a landmark experiment which aimed to show that an ape could learn to communicate with language if raised and nurtured like a human child. Following Nim’s extraordinary journey through human society, and the enduring impact he makes on the people he meets along the way, the film is an unflinching and unsentimental biography of an animal we tried to make human. What we learn about his true nature– and indeed our own– is comic, revealing and profoundly unsettling.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Confirmed For‘Cry Macho,’Rumored For‘Twins’Sequel | /Film

Arnold Schwarzenegger‘s return to the screen got off to a rocky start withThe Governator, but he was a possible candidate for a couple of projects, like Kim Ji-Woon’sThe Last Stand, that might push him out of the standard Arnie zone. But it looks likeThe Last Standis off the list, because Arnold is nowconfirmedto star inCry Macho, reportsof which started to appear last week.

The film is based on aRichard N. Nashnovel from’75, and the author wrote the film script as well. He passed away in 2000, but producer Al Ruddy has kept the project alive, and now has Arnie signed to appear and a sales package ready for the upcoming market at Cannes. So, things stand as we recently reported them, but now there is no doubt that the film is going out to gather funds, and with this particular actor set to appear that probably won’t be any problem at all.

After the break, we shamelessly pass on the rumor that various interested parties want to make aTwinssequel. Don’t expect this to actually happen.

WhileCry Machocould be a good way for the actor to move forward, there is now the rumor of a sequel to the 1988 comedyTwins, directed by Ivan Reitman and co-starring Danny Devito. What’s Playinggot this email:

A Twins sequel. Knowing Arnold, Danny De Vito and Ivan Reitman are all still in touch and want to work together again, Universal came to them about it. It’s a germ of an idea that could spread fast.

I checked with Universal and they didn’t have any info to offer— the rep I contacted didn’t know anything about it— so I’d treat this as nothing more than a big rumor for now. After watchingThe GovernatorandTerminatordealsstart to happen it is easy to give this one some credit, because it would be one more easy project that relies more on a past film than on branching out. But let’s hope, for the sake of all our sanity, that it is nothing but rumor.

‘Catfish’Directors To Helm‘Paranormal Activity 3′| /Film

Henry JoostandAriel Schulman, the directors behind last year’s controversial documentaryCatfish, have reportedly been hired by Paramount to directParanormal Activity 3, according toDread CentralandBloody-Disgusting. With an eye onan October 21, 2011 release date,Christopher B. Landon, who wrote the second film in the faux-documentary horror franchise,is writing the scriptwhile original director Oren Peli will produce along with Jason Blum.

There’s no additional information at the time but once we have it, we’ll let you know. One can safely assume, however, that the film would once again follow the character or family of Katie (Katie Featherston) who played such a significant role in the first two films.

As for Joost and Schulman, they are a very interesting choice.Catfishwas sort of theirRoger& Me, as they were both behind and in front of the camera. They certainly built plenty of tension in the film but to jump from a documentary into an already established horror franchise as your first narrative feature must be overwhelming. Plus, without a finished script yet, it’s going to be quite the mad dash to get the movie ready by October.

Do you think they’re up to the task? What do you think about this pairing? And where do you think the story will go?

‘Hell on Wheels’Trailer: AMC Goes West | /Film

In March of this year, the showHell on Wheels, a Western set during the building of the Transcontinental Railroad, started shooting in Alberta. The series is AMC’s latest foray into Big Television— ten episodes have been ordered to begin telling the story of a man seeking to avenge the death of his wife at the hands of Union soldiers. See the first footage, after the break.

The cast includesAnson Mount(Hick, theStraw Dogsremake) as Cullen Bohannon, a Confederate soldier in search of revenge;Dominique McElligott(Sam Rockwell’s wife inMoon) as Lily Bell,“a housewife caring for her ill husband,” andCommonplaying Elam, a freed slave. Additionally,Colm Meaney,Ben Esler,Eddie Spears, andPhilip Burkeare cast. You’ll see most of them here, in glimpses at least.

So how does the footage look? Not bad, so far. There’s some good stuff here, but it is difficult to crawl out from under the massive shadow cast byDeadwood. The modern TV Western is so defined by David Milch’s show that anything else has to work harder than normal. So let’s giveHell on Wheelssome time— it won’t be out until later this year. Besides, Common looks like he might be a standout here, and that would be pretty alright.

Theofficial sitehas this info:“Hell on Wheels is a contemporary western about post-Civil War America that focuses on a Confederate soldier who sets out to exact revenge on the Union soldiers who have killed his wife.” There’s also this:

His journey takes him west to‘Hell on Wheels,’ a dangerous, raucous, lawless melting pot of a town that travels with and services the construction of the first transcontinental railroad, an engineering feat unprecedented for its time. The series documents the railroad’s incredible feat of engineering and construction as well as the institutionalized greed and corruption, the immigrant experience, and the plight of the newly emancipated African-Americans during reconstruction. Over time,“Hell on Wheels” chronicles this potent turning point in our nation’s history, and how uncivilized the business of civilization can be.

Casting Bits: Larry David as a Nun in‘The Three Stooges;’Armie Hammer Attached to’2:22;’Frank Grillo in‘Lay the Favorite’| /Film

Want to seeLarry Davidplay a nun? How about a nun named Mother Mengele? Then you’ll need a ticked for theFarrelly BrothersThe Three Stooges. Larry David was rumored to play one of the Stooges for some time, but now he’ll be“the unfortunate nun who runs the orphanage where the Stooges grow up and learn to create mayhem.” This particular casting is the best thing about the movie so far, and has probably earned my ticket no matter what else I read or see about it.

As for the rest of the cast,Chris Diamantopouloswill play Moe,Will Sassowill be Curly, andSean Hayesis Larry.Jane Lynchis Mother Superior, another nun at the orphanage, andSofia Vergaraplays a femme fatale. {Deadline}

After the break, Armie Hammer is attached to a new thriller and the gambling comedy/memoirLay the Favoritegets a new man.

As Cannes approaches, we’re going to start hearing about a lot of films that have actors attached in the hopes of pulling together financing via the Cannes sales market. One of these is2:22, a‘psychological thriller’ that now hasArmie Hammer(The Social Network,J. Edgar) attached to star as an air traffic controller who is led into a predicament via several unusual factors: a double murder, a near-midair collision between two planes, and a blindingly bright light that appears at 2:22 one day. How do those things all come together? Here’s more plot from the same press release that announces a planned shoot in Australia later this year:

… a rollercoaster thriller that centers on Dylan (Hammer) an air traffic controller who is given a jolt when he narrowly escapes being responsible for a mid air collision between two passenger planes.  Caused by a mysterious blinding light that happened at 2:22, these strange occurrences continue and lead Dylan to meet Sarah, with whom he feels inexplicably linked. Together the two discover uncanny similarities with their current predicament and a double murder committed a generation ago. Witha grim fate looming, Dylan must solve the mystery of 2:22 to preserve a love whose second chance has finally come.

Todd SteinandNathan Parkerco-wrote (the latter wroteMoon— yay!— and the Jason Statham movieBlitz) andPaul Curriedirects, should the film actually happen. Will this really come together with Armie Hammer in the lead? No idea about that, but we’ll be following it.

Finally,Frank Grillo, fromThe Gates, has signed on toLay the Favorite, the gambling comedy that already featuresRebecca Hallas Beth Raymer,“a woman who fell into professional gambling in Las Vegas,” andBruce Willis,Catherine Zeta-Jones,Justin TimberlakeandJoshua Jackson. Frank Grillo will be a would-be ladies man and part of a crew of gamblers led by Bruce Willis.Stephen Frearsdirects from a script byD.V. DeVincentisbased on Beth Raymer’s memoir. The basic plot description:

A dramedy centered on a thirtysomething woman who becomes involved with a group of geeky fiftyish men who have found a way to work the sportsbook system in Las Vegas to their advantage.

‘Hara-Kiri: Death Of A Samurai’ Teaser and Photos–Takashi Miike Returns to the Samurai Remake | /Film

Takashi Miikeis best known for his hyper-explicit button-pushing films likeIchi the Killer,AuditionandVisitor Q, but he has dabbled in just about every possible film genre. Lately he’s been in‘stately samurai’ mode. His film13 Assassinshas been available on iTunes for a few weeks and opens in some theaters today. (And is very, very good.)

His next,Hara-Kiri: Death of a Samuraiis a 3D film, and will premiere at Cannes in just a couple weeks. The teaser trailer for that one is out now, and it looks just as good as13 Assassins, if in a slightly different way.

Here’s the teaser:

Not much to it, right? So why be excited about that? The answer:13 Assassins. That was Takashi Miike’s most satisfying pictures in a long time, and in the fullness of time I wouldn’t be surprised to see it emerge as one of his best. AndHara-Kirilooks like it is very much cut from the same mold, if perhaps with an emphasis on emotional character interaction rather than the action-packed bloodletting of the second half of13 Assassins. (Both films incidentally, are remakes of’60s samurai films, but Miike is hardly a stranger to the remake.)

Hara-Kiri is set in the 17th century and follows“Hanshiro (Ebizo Ichikawa), an honorable, poverty-stricken samurai requesting to commit hara-kiri in the courtyard of feudal lord Kageyu’s estate. Trying to dismiss Hanshiro’s wish to save face, Kageyu (Koji Yakusho) recounts the tragic story of a similar plea years ago from young ronin Motome (Eita). But the arrogant lord is unaware of vengeful Hanshiro’s bond to Motome.”

Is This The Title To Quentin Tarantino’s Next Movie? | /Film

We’ve heard rumblings about about Quentin Tarantino’s next movie for a while now. It’s aspaghetti western. It’ll starChristoph Waltz.Franco Nero,Keith Carradinemight be in it. Uma Thurman called it“a southern.” But up until now, we still had no idea what it was called. Then, Friday on Twitter, someone tweeted a photo of what looks to bethe title page of the script. Is this the actual script and what’s the title? You’re gonna have to click the jump to find out.

A Twitter user named@AgentTraineetweeted the following picture earlier today:

Django Unchained

Is that the title? It certainly looks like it. We know fromInglourious Basterdsthat Tarantino likes to hand write the titles on the first page of his script. Plus, there’s the classic 1966 spaghetti western calledDjangothat starred Franco Nero. The same Franco Nero who was rumored to be in this movie. Here’s the plot description of that original filmfrom the IMDB:

A coffin-dragging gunslinger enters a town caught between two feuding factions, the KKK and a gang of Mexican Bandits, and is caught up in a struggle against them.

Is Tarantino’s film some sort of homage to that, much like the originalInglourious Basterds? With the Nero connection, I’d bank on it.

So, what do you think of this title?

Thanks to Twitter user@FuMikeChufor the heads up.

Summit Buys‘Ender’s Game’With Gavin Hood Directing | /Film

Ender’s Gameis a property that has been in development for what seems like forever. The last big attempt to make the film started in 2002 when Warner Bros. optioned it and eventually set Wolfgang Petersen to direct. That versiondiedin 2009, at which point Odd Lot picked up the option and eventually hiredGavin Hood(Tsotsi,Wolverine) toscript. At the beginning of this yearAlex KurtzmanandRoberto Orciadded their cloutto the effort.

Now Summit has signed on to co-finance and distribute a film based on the Gavin Hood script, and has set him to direct as well.

Deadlinepositions the deal as having roots in Summit’s desire for a franchise to replace the waningTwilight. And that’s probably at least partially correct, as theOrson Scott CardnovelEnder’s Gameis the first in a series of books that have a big sci-fi fanbase. And the characters, especially in this first chapter, are young— so the film could be a rival to films likeThe Hunger Games.

As Germain said in September, the novel“is the story of a a boy nicknamed Ender who, at a very young age, is chosen to go into space for Battle School. Battle School is a place where adults train gifted children to be military leaders for an imminent war using zero gravity war games, interactive digital simulations and a whole bunch of cold-blooded precision and aggression.” There’s a big twist at the end which puts the whole story into a new pespective, but for those few people who don’t know what the truth of the story is I’ll let someone else spoil it.

But the crux is that core of the novel has the intersection of children and the military, and that’s is loaded, potentially touchy subject matter. Which makes it potentially great, but Ireally want to seeGavin Hood’s script to see how he’s handled it.

The film will be sold to other territories at Cannes, and Gavin Hood is putting together a presentation to show while in France. With that movement underway, we could potentially start to hear casting information sooner rather than later.

Armie Hammer Ready to Ride as‘The Lone Ranger’| /Film

Gore Verbinskimay have his second star to appear inThe Lone RangeroppositeJohnny Depp‘s Tonto.Armie Hammer, who broke out big withThe Social Network, co-starred with Leonardo DiCaprio in Clint Eastwood’sJ. Edgarand has been tapped for Relativity’sSnow White, is in early talks to play the‘star’ of this new look at one of America’s big Western heroes.

Jerry Bruckheimer is producing the Gore Verbinski movie based onJustin Haythe‘s script. At first the notion of a new Lone Ranger seemed weird, but we’ve learned that this is meant as both an origin story (ho-hum) and an inversion of the old hero paradigm that defined previous screen incarnations of the character. Gore Verbinski said,

The only version of‘The Lone Ranger’ I’m interested in doing is ‘Don Quixote’ told from Sancho Panza’s point of view… And hence I was honest early on with Johnny that Tonto isthe part. We’re not going to do it {straight}, everyone knows that story. I don’t want to tell that story.

So Armie Hammer’s Lone Ranger could be perfect. He’s got that clean-scrubbed‘all-American boy’ look, and could easily play many variations on a Quixote-like hero. He could be the idealistic buffoon, the driven and single-minded hero, or some other incarnation. He should also be a great foil for Johnny Depp. I’m currently picturing the Depp Tonto as a more grounded version of Jack Sparrow. It’s not necessarily the most inspiring thing to think that one Verbinski/Depp teamup will lay the groundwork for this new one, but being realistic that’s quite possibly how things will go.

And while Ryan Gosling is great, I like the idea of Armie Hammer playing this role quite a bit more. He might not be able to bring quite the same darkness to it that Ryan Goslingcould have, but he’ll be able to  {Deadline}

First Video: Tarsem’s‘Immortals’{Updated} | /Film

Update:A leak of the full trailer, in measurably better quality, is now available. Since it doesn’t seem to be the official release, we’ve just added it to this post and bumped. Look out for the official release, hopefully with HD, very soon.

Last night E! showed part of the first trailer forTarsem Singh‘sImmortals, and a bootleg video of the segment is online. The footage seems to make up most of the film’s teaser trailer, and shows off a lot of post-300action, filtered through Tarsem’s recognizable style, and shows off most of the core cast that includesHenry Cavill,Stephen Dorff,Isabel Lucas,Freida Pinto,Luke Evans,Kellan Lutz,John HurtandMickey Rourke. Check it out after the break.

Beyond even the fact of the annoying voice-over, the quality here is pretty lousy. Though in a way that adds to the aesthetic— it makesImmortalslook like a dusty VHS tape of a forgotten film from the early’80s. Which is what it should be, in a way. That rapid-fire bow action at the end, that is so reminiscent ofHawk the Slayer, sure didn’t help break the comparison.

Part of the attraction here for those who haven’t seenThe TudorsorStardustwill be a look at Henry Cavill, the next Superman, going through action beats for Tarsem. He looks great, and it is really easy to imagine him wearing the big‘S.’

We’ll update with a post for the high-quality trailer when it arrives.Immortalsopens on November 11.

Here’s the better quality full video:
